Different tools adopt different terms, metrics, and ways to identify and measure technical debt (TD). Researchers attempt to clarify the situation by comparing the features and popularity of technical debt measurement tools and analyzing the existing empirical evidence on their validity. Researchers’ aim is to provide an overview of the current landscape of TD measurement tools through a set of objective criteria related to the offered features and their popularity. Practitioners can use this overview to assess the tools, understand their strengths and weaknesses, and ultimately select the most suitable one for their needs.
