© 2021 American Chemical Society.Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), as one of the most common two–dimensional (2D) metal sulfides, has been attracting much attention in the area of energy storage and environmental remediation, because of its fascinating properties. Although much research regarding the environmental application of MoS2 have been recently summarized, reports on the recent progress of the removal of various environmental pollutants on MoS2 are still scarce. Herein, we systematically summarize the efficient elimination of environmental contaminants (e.g., gas, organic, heavy metals, and radionuclides) on MoS2–based nanosheets. In addition, the interaction mechanisms (e.g., physical (hydrogen bonding, van der Waals forces), ion–exchange, chemical adsorption, and redox) of environmental contaminants on MoS2–based materials were elucidated in detail. Finally, the major challenges and future prospective on MoS2–based materials were presented. This review has important implication for the design of MoS2–based materials with high adsorption performance and strong redox capacity toward the removal of various environmental pollutants in actual application.
