© 2021 The Electrochemical Society ("ECS"). Published on behalf of ECS by IOP Publishing Limited. The asynchronous transient responses at the edge and center of a gold disk electrode are monitored by in situ differential reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The DRS spectrum collected in 10 mM perchloric acid shows that the edge of the electrode achieves the equilibrium sooner than the center does in chronoamperometry, which establishes the foundation for a similar electrochemical protocol to remove the metallic Cu at the edge of a Cu/Au disk electrode while keeping these at the center intact. Both phenomena are caused by the larger resistance at the center than the edge of a disk electrode.
